Double talk or double standard in anything hockey you would like to address?

Posted by admin on Nov 2, 2009 under Arizona Desert Landscaping

Over the years I have heard alot of talk from the Hockey Purest’s, none other than where the lines should be drawn and Ice Hockey it self should never cross over. Depending on who you ask, either the game should never be out of Canada or out of the areas that get snow and ice.

I’m not saying they should not have that opinion but I disagree since it was the invention of the ice rink that evolved such sports as hockey, figure skating, speed skating on the globe and without this invention there will never be a so much as any Stanley Cup final held in June in Canada or most of Canada anyway.

Where I do take issue is so many of these Hockey Purest’s say Hockey should never be in the Sunbelt places( i. e. Florida, Arizona, etc) yet these are the same people who want too see an NHL team in Las Vegas, A DESERT CITY. A city thats gets hotter than most of the AZ desert landscape.

What is the justification for this? Ignorance?
I could say more but I wanna get your thoughts.

Thank you!!!
Joe that is a more reasonable argument there although Quebec had an NHL team and the City and the Providence didn’t give enough support of the team and now The team is in Denver.
Winnipeg had one too and now they are in a City I think supports this team more.
Hamalton I could see getting one but that would have to be at the NHL’ s disgression.

True about Atlanta I say move them right away but that will never happen as long as Bettman is still around.
What cities would you like to see those 2 or 3 teams in? Which NHL team are your referring to as a Cleveland Browns move?

I think it’s a good thing for the NHL to be in Southern cities, but I think some (Nashville anyone?) were odd choices. But still, there are a large number of Northern transplants and people in the South are getting more interested in hockey.

Atlanta should most definitely keep a team – it’s a very wealth city with a metro area population of ~5 million. Let me tell you, there are enough fans here, the only reason it doesn’t seem that way is that the organization is so poorly run (I’m not a Thrashers fan, I just live in Atlanta).

And for what it’s worth, the guy who said Dallas doesn’t have enough support is nuts: Dallas’ attendance averages going into this year were 17,914, 18,527, 18,532, 18,355 and 17,829 over the last five years, each year higher than Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh or Chicago averaged in ANY of those years.

Hockey is a great sport and can thrive in the Southern United States, it just takes a little more work to get things off the ground there.

  1. Joe Said,

I never minded hockey in Phoenix or Florida but I do feel Canada needs more teams in the NHL.How can ATLANTA have a team but Quebec doesn’t?Ludicrous. The purests I think would argue that theres way too many teams as it is and miss the days of just 6 teams. Not so sure about that not being a purest and all.

**Howler-True but Atlanta never supports there team but i’d like to see at least 2 or 3 more teams from Canada in the mix.I didn’t know the city didn’t back the team..Is that true?Didn’t they sellout every night?I thought it was like a Cleveland Browns move.

Howler I was talking about Quebec’s move.I thought they were beloved in Quebec like the Browns were in Cleveland. No?

…Perhaps the purists would also say that the sheer numbers of teams these days "dilute" the quality of the "hockey player." People that would have made a professional team in the current era would never have been considered to play in the "original six." I believe that it is an antiquated idea that only the *cold* can have hockey… or only those north of the border for example. . . Take a look at the playoffs RIGHT NOW for example. . . competitive, exciting, skilled… perhaps the focus should be turned to the officiating (which frankly has not been stellar)… but that’s another conversation/ question all together.

Because hockey teams in southern yank cities for the most part are fare weather idiots that don’t know the game. The teams barley survive. It should stay in the north where the money is. People in Carolina, Pheonix and Dallas don’t give a damn about hockey. Maybe a small %, but that isn’t enough for the sport to ‘thrive’ in the south. Its just enough to survive and scrape by.

Anyone who thinks expansion is bad obviously doesn’t care about the game to begin with. Those expansion cities generate more revenue which means more TV, and that means we get to see more of it.
I’m all for expansion, as long as it doesn’t get crazy.. I mean, imagine 6 teams playing… call me crazy, but I call that boring.
As for hockey being played in warmer climates… If the city can generate the revenue then it’s good for the league and therefore good for all the teams.
I do agree that it would be nice to see more teams north of the border, but then every time I start thinking nice things like that some total canadian jerk-off like "don’t taze me bro" rears his pathetically uninformed, uneducated head and then I just have to laugh.
People like him are like seeing a dog chase it’s tail- cute, but ultimately stupid.

I don’t have a problem with more US and Sunbelt cities having NHL teams so long as it doesn’t mean Canada loses more teams to those cities.

I have been hearing more and more of an attitude amongst a minority of Americans that they wish Canada would stay out of American sports, including the NHL. Aside from the fact that basketball was invented by a Canadian working in the US, and football was co-developed by Montreal’s McGill University, and the USA’s Harvard University, and others, the much more accepted fact that Canada invented hockey just makes this seem so wrong. Just as wrong as Canadians who want hockey to be only Canadian.

Really, I think that all four major leagues have enough of a talent pool and fanbase throughout our continent to put up more teams in both Canada and the US, so that nobody needs to feel left out.
